Research Fellowship program for the

Master of Science in Computer Science

To increase the opportunities for Rice undergraduates to participate in graduate level research, the Department of Computer Science will offer Research Fellowships for its Master of Science degree to select Rice undergraduates. Upon admission to the program in their junior year, Fellows will receive monetary support for their research activities as well as tuition support for two semesters in the Masters of Science program. We envision this program to be a competitive one in which up to four Fellowships are awarded each year.

The target population for this Fellowship program is the set of Rice students who often go to graduate school at other top institutions. For students, the value of this Fellowship program is that it gives them exposure to graduate level research prior to graduation and guaranteed support during the Masters program. For the Computer Science department, the program increases the Department’s chances of retaining these students at Rice in the Department’s Ph.D. program due to the increased exposure to departmental research and the lure of an accelerated graduation timetable.

Overview

• Rice undergraduates apply for the fellowship by January 15^th of their junior year. Application materials will include a transcript and three letters of recommendation from Rice faculty with one letter from the applicants proposed research advisor and a one-page research statement by the applicant. (GRE scores may be submitted at the discretion of the applicant.) Students who intend to apply for this program must contact Bel Martinez (bellem@rice.edu), Ron Goldman (rng@rice.edu), and Scott Rixner (rixner@rice.edu) for additional instructions BEFORE applying.

• By February 1st recipients will be notified of fellowship award and guaranteed admission in the Department of Computer Science Master of Science program upon completion of their undergraduate degree.

• Fellows receive full-time support for research during the two summers between their junior year and the start of graduate program. Fellows may also receive part-time support for research conducted during their senior year.

• Fellows receive full tuition and research stipend for two semesters of study while they complete their Masters of Science thesis.

• Students completing the program receive preferential consideration for admission to the Rice CS Ph.D. program and will benefit from an accelerated graduation schedule.
